MCE Systems
Gamifying mobile grading tests

Problem Statement
Users reported that MCE’s cosmetic grading tests felt boring and unengaging, causing them to lose focus and drop off.
Goals & Objectives
Increase engagement and completion rates
Transform a repetitive task into a fun experience
Research & Insights
Repetitive tasks reduce focus and increase inconsistency
Small rewards and progress indicators improve motivation
Clear progress feedback encourages users to continue
Approach & Strategy
The grading experience was redesigned as a series of interactive stages to make the process more engaging while preserving evaluation accuracy.
A mobile phone mascot was introduced to add personality and guide users through the experience, featuring within the games and reinforcing progress to encourage completion.
Progress indicators and milestone rewards were introduced to provide a sense of achievement and encourage completion. Visual cues and micro-interactions created a more responsive experience, helping users stay focused during repetitive tasks.
Virtual coins were awarded for completing assessments, providing a simple incentive model while reinforcing consistent participation. Clear feedback and structured progression ensured users understood their progress and maintained confidence in the grading process.
Game Journey Mapping
Example Original Test vs Gamified Experience
The original test required users to touch every square in a grid, reimagined as a game where they swipe to collect coins.

Final Designs
The trial included three gamified tests: a touchscreen grid test reimagined as a coin-collecting swipe game, a battery drain test set in a pool where users avoid obstacles on lilos, and a multi-touch test redesigned as a whack-a-mole style game. A short phase also introduced reward screens showing coins collected with options to redeem phone-related rewards.
