The Challenge

Vodafone want to introduce a device care experience that encourages regular phone health check-ins, much like wearable health trackers support personal wellbeing, and offers clear guidance when performance declines, including repair, troubleshooting or trade-in options.

Goals & Objectives

  1. Make device health easy to understand at a glance

  2. Encourage regular check-ins and preventative care

  3. Provide clear actions when performance declines

  4. Enable self-service and lifecycle options including repair, upgrade or trade-in

Research & Insights

  • People rarely think about device health until something goes wrong.

  • Diagnostic information can be hard for non-experts to understand.

  • Simple visual signals make device health easier to understand.

  • Gentle reminders can encourage regular check-ins and preventative care.

Approach & Strategy

The aim was to help users understand device health before problems occur. Instead of technical diagnostics, the home screen presents a simple “feels like age” indicator, showing how the device is performing in real terms. For example, a phone might feel like it is 4.8 years old despite being only 2.5 years old.

Behind the scenes, AI analyses battery health, storage, performance and software status to determine this rating, while colour cues communicate condition at a glance. Green indicates healthy performance, yellow signals attention is needed, and orange highlights more urgent issues.

Common problems such as low storage, battery degradation, background app usage and outdated software are translated into clear summaries and guided actions. Users can take quick steps to improve performance, such as freeing storage or updating software, or explore repair and upgrade options when needed.

Calm, health inspired colours and supportive language communicate status without causing alarm, while proactive insights highlight improvements or issues requiring attention.

By bringing health status, guidance and service options into one place, the design focuses on preventative care and helps users maintain performance while making informed repair, upgrade or trade in decisions.

Journey Mapping

Concept

A proactive device health experience that simplifies technical data into clear signals and guided actions for everyday users.

This is an early-stage concept currently in progress. Initial designs are being explored and refined, with ongoing testing focused on clarity of device health indicators
